Scholarships & Support

The Department of Music offers scholarships of varying amounts to incoming and returning music students by application and audition. All funds are administered by the Longwood University Foundation, except the Holiday Dinner Scholarship Fund which is administered by the Department.

Awards range from $500 to the cost of tuition, and are open by audition to students who are in good academic standing. A 2.5 GPA is the minimum requirement for rising sophomores; a 3.0 GPA is the minimum requirement for rising juniors and seniors.

Scholarship Funds Available to All Students

Pauline Boehm Haga Music Scholarship Fund

Awarded to the rising junior or senior music major with the highest overall GPA (minimum 3.25). Established in 1984 following the death of music faculty member Pauline B. Haga, by her family.

Hull Music Scholarship Fund

Awarded to residents of Virginia who exhibit excellence in participation and leadership in music. Provided through gifts from Mr. Andrew Hull and Duvahl Ridgeway Hull, ‘33.

Holiday Dinner Scholarship Fund

Awarded to any Longwood University student based on contributions to ensemble or solo performance. Funded primarily by money raised through the Department’s annual Holiday Dinner & Concerts patrons.

Roy Clark Music Scholarship Fund,

Awarded to any music student by audition. Funded by proceeds from Roy Clark benefit concerts, which were held annually on Longwood’s campus during Mr. Clark’s lifetime.

Scholarship Funds Targeting Specific Students

Mary Puckett Asher King Scholarship Fund

Awarded to a student pursuing Music Education, with priority to incoming freshmen. Provided through gifts in honor of Mary Puckett Asher King, class of 1950 and former Longwood professor, by her friends.

Kinzer Music Scholarship Fund

Awarded to an incoming Music major. Established in 2018 as the Lucy Hall Kennedy ’53 Scholarship, this fund was renamed at the request of the donor in 2021, to honor music faculty members Charlie and Lisa Kinzer.

Nancy Jones Carter Scholarship Fund

Awarded to a student pursuing Music Education. Established in 2007 in memory of Nancy Jones Carter, ’55, by family and friends.

SAI Rose Scholarship Fund

Awarded to a rising junior or senior who is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota in good standing. Established in 2007 by the family of Kristin Holbert ’81.

Thomas A. Williams Scholarship Fund

Awarded to a student studying voice. Established by Longwood Music alum Owen Compher ’03, honoring former faculty member Thom Williams.

Fully Endowed Scholarships

Waverly M. Cole Music Scholarships

Renewable scholarships awarded to students who are new to a music degree program, can range as high as full tuition. Funded by a generous donation by Dr. Waverly Cole of Richmond, Virginia.

Linda Pritchard Smith and Richard F. Smith Scholarships

Awarded to a Virginia resident pursuing Music Education who demonstrates academic achievement. Provided by Linda Pritchard Smith ’67 and her husband Richard.

Support for Music Department Programs

Longwood University Foundation maintains two funds that support our programs directly. 

Chamber Music Endowment Fund, supporting the Chamber Music Series. This Series brings professional musicians to Longwood’s campus and enables the Music Department to host free professional concerts for our students and community.

Music General Fund, supporting special initiatives and one-time programs of the Department, such as guest artist masterclasses, student retention initiatives, and special equipment needs. This fund allows us to supplement our program and ensure that our students have access to a wide variety of professional and educational experiences.
