Longwood’s National Association for Music Education Collegiate (LU-NAFMEC) student organization has been named a recipient of the 2023 Chapter of Excellence Award in the Service Category. The service category is awarded to a chapter that demonstrates “a project organized and carried out by the chapter to benefit music education at large or music or music education programs in the community.”
Following a loss of membership and access to music classrooms during COVID-19, the Executive team was determined to restart their outreach and service to the larger community in 2022-23. Led by chapter president Malik Thornton and supported by advisor Dr. Jackie Secoy, music education students led sectionals at the Pittsylvania All County Band event, were visible in their support of music department events, helped build a new music filing system for a school, and were guest presenters, performers, and teachers at the William Campbell "Rehearse-a-Thon".
Our NAfMEC chapter values and acts upon the belief that music strengthens all students across the world. This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Longwood Music Education majors as members of the Longwood music community and the education of music students across Virginia. Congratulations to our NAfMEC student leaders!
