The Health & Fitness Center is LEED Gold certified and received the 2008 Virginia Sustainable Building Network's Green Innovation Award for Best Institutional Project.
Design features incorporated into the facility include:
- Waterless and water-efficient technologies reduces water use by 40 percent
- Energy-efficient HVAC system and other energy saving strategies result in a 43 percent reduction in energy use
- Renewable energy provided by the campus' central biomass heating plant
- HVAC equipment free of ozone-depleting HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons) and halons
- Carbon dioxide monitoring system provides adequate ventilation and increases energy efficiency
- Construction waste management resulted in the diversion of more than 98 percent of waste from the landfill
- Regionally-manufactured and recycled-content materials used
- Adhesives, sealants, paints, carpet and composite wood products with low or no VOCs (volatile organic compounds) used
- Walk-off mats at main entrances reduce the amount of pollutants entering the building
- Wood floors, casework and wood doors throughout the building are Forest Stewardship Council certified
