Longwood students swept the student research poster contest at the 2017 Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia conference. First place went to Joyanna Struzzieri, M.S. ’17, (pictured) for her thesis. Second place went to Kayla Stramat, M.S. ’17 and third place went to a team of students in Dr. Kellyn Hall’s research class.
The Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia (SHAV) promotes professional excellence and advocates quality services for people with communication, swallowing, and hearing disabilities. Formed in 1957, SHAV is a nonprofit organization of professionals working to meet the needs of people with communication impairments in Virginia. Longwood students have served as student representatives on the SHAV board and regularly participate in SHAV’s Advocacy Day with the Virginia General Assembly each January.
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is the professional, scientific, and credentialing association for audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists.

The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is a pre-professional membership association for students interested in the study of communication sciences and disorders. Led and governed by Longwood students, NSSLHA members attend monthly meetings to stay informed about upcoming events while also forming positive relationships with their peers. NSSLHA members volunteer for many community events and professional conferences such as the annual Literacy Fair and the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia (SHAV) conference. Members who have maintained active membership for two semesters are recognized at Commencement with NSSLHA cords.
Chi Sigma Iota is the international society for students, professional counselors and counselor educators established at Ohio University in 1985. Its mission is to promote scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership and excellence in counseling, and to recognize high attainment in the pursuit of academic and clinical excellence in the profession of counseling. Recent community service projects include a food drive to benefit area residents.
