Summer Clinic Volunteer Opportunities

Graduate students have opportunities to practice their skills through summer learning camps designed for children and youth. Organized by graduate students and hosted on-site at Longwood’s SHLS center, summer camps focus on strengthening language and reading skills through games and learning activities while having fun in a relaxed environment.

Camp Jump Start

Camp JumpStart is an intensive emergent literacy program designed for preschool children age 3 ½ to 5 years old. Campers participate in activities and shared book-readings to promote alphabet knowledge, phonological and phonemic awareness, concepts of print, developmental writing and oral language skills.

Camp L.E.G.O.

Camp L.E.G.O. (Language Enrichment through Games and Opportunities) immerses children, ages 6-10, in a fun and engaging environment that increases motivation for language learning and enhances social communication skills. Campers enjoy entertaining games, crafts, book readings and short field trips.

Reader’s Theater

Reader’s Theater, for children and adolescents age 6 and older, incorporates an engaging and motivating strategy that combines reading practice and performance. Reader’s Theater enhances campers’ reading skills and confidence by having them practice reading with a purpose.

Camp Loud and Clear   

Camp Loud and Clear is an overnight summer camp for deaf/hard of hearing children and youth in southern Central Virginia. No other summer camp in Virginia is staffed or equipped to accept children with hearing loss regardless of their communication means. The camp is a program of the Virginia Cooperative Extension conducted in partnership with Longwood University’s Speech, Hearing, and Learning Services, Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center, and a team of dedicated volunteers and professionals.
