Endorsement Courses & Requirements
Designed for educators who already hold a master’s degree, this endorsement provides the skills teacher-leaders need to empower them to teach reading and writing across the curriculum within the parameters of literacy-based techniques and assessments. This coursework meets the Virginia Department of Education requirements to add a Reading Specialist endorsement to your license.
Completion of the following courses is required:
- READ520 Teaching English Language Learners (3)
- READ620 Word Study: Phonics, Spelling and Language (3)
- READ660 Evaluation and Applied Practicum in Early Literacy (3)
- READ664 Evaluation and Applied Practicum in Emergent Literacy (3)
- READ650 Evaluation of Literacy Research (3)
- READ670 Evaluation and Applied Practicum in Intermediate and Adolescent Literacy (3)
- READ680 Literacy Leaders (3)
- READ691 Professional Portfolio (1)
Total Credits: 22
English Learner Endorsement Package (ESL PreK-12 Endorsement)
This option offers preparation for an English as a Second Language PreK-12 Endorsement. In Virginia, teachers are eligible for the ESL Endorsement with passing scores on the State test. RLL offers the professional knowledge needed to pass the test and effectively work with English Learners.
Preparation for the State test includes:
- READ 520 Teaching English Learners in a Multicultural Society (which is part of the requirements for the Master's including an Endorsement degree, and would be an additional course for those who are Endorsement Only)
- ELL Bootcamp is offered through Graduate and Professional Studies starting in Summer of 2019
**All applicants must enter the program with a valid teaching license**
**You become eligible for the literacy specialist endorsement from the Virginia Department of Education upon completing the RLL degree (Master's or Endorsement Only), passing the RVE state exam, and having at least three years of classroom experience teaching reading.**
Admission Requirements
- Official bachelor’s degree transcripts from an accredited college or university and all transcripts for subsequent coursework
- A minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 2.75+ (on 4.0 scale). Options are available if you do not meet this requirement
- Two letters of recommendation, one from a supervisor
- Resume
- Essay, 500 words or less, addressing reasons for seeking graduate education
- Valid Virginia Teaching License or equivalent from another state
- $40 Application Fee
Although not a requirement for admission, three years of classroom experience are required for all tracks in order to receive an endorsement in reading.
International Student applicants should review the international admission requirements and standards for TOEFL scores.

Early Decision: November 29 (Fall and Summer tracks)
- Fall: July 1
- Summer: April 1

The M.Ed. Degree is 34 credits, making the cost breakdown:
