Like to know how things work? If it's answers you're after, join Longwood's Physics department. Our program centers on the basic principles and phenomena of the universe. Let us help you discover why matter, well, matters.
Launch into one of these stellar jobs with a degree in physics.
Examine the basic principles and phenomena of the universe in one of our four concentrations:
You'll explore every day, real-world applications of physics. This is a good choice if you're planning on going to graduate school or want a career in research, industry or teaching.
From atoms to environments you'll explore life's processes. Biophysics will prepare you for a career examining life at every level.

This dual degree program will prepare you for a lifelong career in math, science and engineering.
There are two paths in this program;
In five years you'll be prepared to solve big problems with creative solutions. Two birds, one stone.
We've built the bridge, should you choose to cross it.
Get the problem-solving and instructional skills to teach physics to grades 6-12 in Virginia's public schools. In addition to a solid foundation in physics, you will also learn specific teaching techniques to make you a great teacher.
You'll take the courses required for a physics major, and courses in Education, Biology, Earth Sciences and Special Education.
See our suggested timeline for completing the Teacher Preparation concentration in Physics.

Sample 4-Year Plan
The physics minor is eight semester hours of general physic and 12 semester hours of advanced physics courses or chemistry courses. You'll take a total of 20 credit hours. Differential and Integral Calculus I and II are required prerequisites for most of the physics minor courses.
Physics relates to other fields of study in the natural and physical sciences. Our curriculum is designed to give you fundamental training in these areas, including Fundamentals of Chemistry, Calculus, The Unity of Life and Human Anatomy and Physiology.
