The Office of Student Research is proud to feature Reagen Kanagawa in this week’s “Scholar Story”.

Reagen Kanagawa, a senior at Longwood University, is majoring in Psychology with a minor in Applied Statistics. She is also a member of Longwood’s Division I softball team. While at Longwood, Reagen worked with her faculty mentor, Dr. Chris Bjornsen, to research the effects of social media use and addiction on emotional and attention dysregulation, and self-concept. Specifically, Reagen studied the effects of social media use and addiction and its effects on mood dysregulation.

Participating in independent research has taught Reagen many valuable skills including learning that “you are not always going to be right and that’s okay. Also, the more participants you have in your study, the stronger your support will be.”

Reagan especially enjoyed being able to express her joy of research and that it helped her use her critical thinking skills.

Reagen received a Student Travel Grant from the Office of Student Research to support her travel to present her research at the Carolinas Psychology Conference in April 2023.

After graduation, Reagen plans to attend graduate school to earn a degree in data analytics.
