Peer mentors are successful upper-class students who are well-versed with Longwood University’s resources and are trained to support students tackling transitional issues such as homesickness, time management and balancing academics with student involvement. Peer mentors understand what it is like to be a new student and all of the questions and concerns that come with that experience. Peer mentors are an invaluable resource for you, whether you are a first-time freshmen student or an upperclassmen transfer student.
You'll meet the peer mentors during Orientation and during New Lancer Days. Your peer mentor will also provide support, alongside your Student Success Coach, throughout the Fall semester.
Students interested in the role of peer mentor endure a rigorous selection process during the spring semester to ensure that they are well-suited for the position and title of peer mentor.
Here are some of the experiences Peer Mentors make happen for new Lancers.
Peer Mentors are the primary student staff who help run Orientation sessions.
As a Peer Mentor you'll:
In 1839, incoming students get to know their Peer mentor, as well as fellow Lancers, in their First Year Community group while learning tips and tricks to prepare for college in an interactive and relatable online environment.
Are the best four days of the best four years of every Lancer's life! As a Peer Mentor, you'll be assigned to your First Year Community through the New Lancer Days program. The New Lancer Days program is where new students learn how to navigate resources on campus, get ready for the start of classes and most importantly: HAVE FUN!
Peer Mentors are partnered with a Student Success Coach, a Longwood faculty or staff member trained to assist students with the transition to college, for the Fall semester. Peer Mentors and Coaches work together to plan activities for their coaching groups and disseminate important information to their students, such as information to prepare for spring registration.
As our programs continue to grow, the Office of Student Success and the First-Year Experience Team seek current students who can reveal their true potential as leaders on Longwood’s campus.
