Dr. Shelby Furman ’16 is the director of food and product safety programs for FMI (formerly known as the Food Marketing Institute). FMI works with and on behalf of the entire industry to advance a safer, healthier and more efficient consumer food supply chain.
Furman, who earned a chemistry degree from Longwood and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Tennessee, works on issues related to chemical contaminants in food and packaging, with a focus on providing technical expertise for science-based policies to regulate these substances and support for FMI members in regard to compliance.
