What do you get when you spend a day working one-on-one with of a team of seasoned business professionals on your networking, resume-writing and interviewing skills?
Lexi Marzloff ’22 got a job.
In June, less than a month after receiving her degree in business, Marzloff will be starting her career journey as a recruiter for Insight Global, a firm that helps match employers with talented job candidates.
She gives much of the credit for landing the position to the group of Longwood alums at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond who gave her the benefit of their experience during a recent Work Shadow day with them.
Organized by Alumni and Career Services, the Work Shadow Program matched Marzloff with Chris Tunstall ’88, the Fed’s senior manager of talent management, who then recruited four of his colleagues—three of them Longwood alums and one a former professor—to participate. (Nearly 30 Longwood graduates currently work at the Fed in Richmond.)
I reached out to Lexi to ask what her what she wanted to get out of the day. Then I tried to develop an agenda around what she told me.

“My approach is that Lancers need to help Lancers,” said Tunstall, who has participated in the Work Shadow Program for the last four years. “I try to meet the needs of the student. I reached out to Lexi to ask what her what she wanted to get out of the day. Then I tried to develop an agenda around what she told me.”
Tunstall apparently is a good listener. “I got out of it exactly what I wanted,” said Marzloff. “I got really wonderful feedback from all of the people I met with.”
Specifically, she got advice on how to improve her resume, how to do a better job of presenting herself in a job interview and even how to decide what kind of a job she would find fulfilling and challenging.
“I’m really interested in banking, and I am incredibly thankful for my finance degree. I also love talking to people. Chris told me that I really needed to think about what I wanted to do—and that helped me focus. He is the reason I got the position I did so quickly. He helped me more than you can believe with my resume.
My new job is a mixture of my favorite things. I can use my communication skills in working with people and, at the same time, use my finance background to develop numbers-based strategies.

For Tunstall, the reward of the Work Shadow Program is helping young professionals get off to a good start in their careers.
“Longwood helped me go from an insecure boy to a confident young man,” he said, recalling his years as a student. “This is a wonderful way to pay it forward.”
Others at the Fed who worked with Marzloff were Carlyle Powell ’08, Jessica Bennett ’06, Darby Dettra ’20 and Ray Brastow, former professor of economics.
