The Richmond Symphony will return to the Jarman Auditorium stage at Longwood University later this month for a special performance showcasing the works of two of classical music’s most celebrated Russian composers.
The Masterworks series concert will be held on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 3 p.m., and will feature Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s The Tempest “Fantasy-Overture,” Op. 18 and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, Op. 45.
Admission to the concert is free for Longwood students with a valid student ID. Tickets for the general public are $20 each and are available online through the Longwood University Box Office. Tickets can also be purchased in person or over the phone at the box office, which is located in the Center for Communication Studies and Theatre and open Tuesday through Friday from 2-6 p.m. The box office phone number is 434-395-2474. Tickets will also be available at the door, payable by cash or check only.
In addition to the pieces by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, the masterworks concert will also include an opera aria, “Depuis le jour ou je me suis donnee” from Act III of Louise by Gustave Charpentier, and Knoxville: Summer of 1915 by Samuel Barber.
“We are thrilled once again to be presenting this world-class orchestra in a program filled with such fascinating variety,” said Dr. Charles Kinzer, professor of music at Longwood. “It begins with Tchaikovsky’s brilliant musical interpretation of The Tempest, a Shakespeare play that will have been presented just weeks before by Longwood’s theatre program. Then it continues with a set of vocal music with a wonderful young soprano soloist and concludes with a return to the stirring sounds of Russian dance music. This concert will offer our audience a complete artistic experience and an afternoon to remember.”
The symphony will be guest conducted by Roderick Cox, winner of the 2018 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award by the U.S. Solti Foundation. The featured guest soprano is Brandie Sutton, who has been hailed by the New York Times for her “warm, ample voice” and “distinctive earthy coloring.”
This is the ninth consecutive academic year that the RSO has performed at Longwood through a partnership established by the late Dr. John Cook, a 1952 alumnus and benefactor of the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences. The endowed partnership provides for one performance each academic year. The concert is hosted by Longwood’s Department of Music and underwritten in part by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts. The Richmond Symphony last performed at Longwood in October 2018.
“Students and our campus community look forward to hosting the Richmond Symphony at Longwood as one of the cultural highlights of each academic year,” said Longwood President W. Taylor Reveley IV. “It is also a highly anticipated event for our neighbors in Farmville and the surrounding area. Being able to bring world-class musicians to campus and experience the majesty of the orchestral experience with our students, friends and neighbors is a deeply enriching gift for which we are grateful.”
