Junior kinesiology major Kevin Napier has been nominated by Longwood University for the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship.
The Truman Scholarship recognizes college juniors from each state who have exceptional leadership potential and are committed to a career in public service. The scholarship includes funding for graduate studies, leadership training and access to an accomplished network of Truman Scholars, including congressmen, U.S. senators and cabinet secretaries. One of the most selective scholarships in existence, each year only 55-65 Truman Scholars are selected from more than 600 who apply.

“Kevin has proven himself to be committed to the principles of citizen leadership through his work at home in the Tri-Cities area, in his time in Longwood student government and in his service as a member of the National Guard,” said Joanna Baker, Longwood’s Truman Foundation faculty representative. “Longwood is proud to nominate a student committed to continuing a life of citizen leadership.”
Napier, a kinesiology major with a concentration in physical education who holds a 3.7 GPA, hopes to study school administration at the University of Virginia after graduating from Longwood and enter a career in school administration. He is an SGA senator and in 2016 led a successful effort to extend hours at Greenwood Library to allow for late-night studying.
In 2015, Kevin became a member of the National Guard, taking a hiatus from Longwood to attend basic and advanced training.
