If you’ve ever wanted to learn to play the ukulele, you don’t have to go to Hawaii. The Longwood Center for Community Music can help.
A ukulele class is among the piano, voice and instrumental classes, as well as private lessons, that will be offered this fall by the center, an outreach program of Longwood University’s music department. Instruction is available for beginners of all ages as well as musicians at intermediate and advanced levels.
To register or for more information, visit LCCM. Anyone interested also can contact Kristen Topham (434-395-2503, tophamk@longwood.edu) for details.
The center, directed by Topham, was launched in the spring with just piano classes. "We’re excited to offer voice and instrumental classes and lessons in addition to piano classes," said Topham, a piano teacher and adjunct faculty member in Longwood’s music department.
This fall’s offerings also will include a music theater workshop, which will improve singing and stage presence for performers in musicals; a guitar class; private clarinet lessons; and a string ensemble. Group and private piano lessons are continuing. A weeklong piano camp was held in June.
The main teachers are all Longwood professors, with Longwood students serving as assistants and interns. Most fall classes will begin the week of Aug. 22 and meet once a week throughout the fall semester. Some classes will include performance opportunities at the end of the semester.
