A unique Longwood University concert celebrating Black History Month, co-sponsored by the Moton Museum, blends legendary poets and composers in a fusion of entertainment and learning this month.
The performance by the chamber ensemble Black, Brown and Beige—named for a composition by renowned jazz artist Duke Ellington—takes place Friday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Wygal Recital Hall on Longwood’s campus. The free performance includes the work of notable poets such as Toni Morrison and Langston Hughes and celebrated composers André Previn and Keith Jarrett.
A reception following the concert will be held in the Haga Room in Wygal.
The chamber ensemble consists of
"I hope that people will leave this concert having learned something about African-Americans’ contribution to the cultural fabric of America, in addition to enjoying the music that will be performed," said Edwards-Burrs. "All of the performers feel very passionate about both the compositions and the need to share this music with audiences everywhere. We hope this is a night to remember."
