Three members of the Longwood University theatre faculty received regional Meritorious Achievement Awards from the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival for their work on Longwood Theatre’s production of The Love of Three Oranges in November 2013.
Scott Chapman, Longwood’s resident scenic and lighting director, received Excellence in Design and Excellence in Production Technology awards; Pamela Arkin, who teaches acting, voice and movement, and is program coordinator for theatre education, an Excellence in Directing award; and Leslie Cook-Day, who teaches costume design and technology, an Excellence in Design award.
Started in 1969, the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival is a national theater program involving more than 600 colleges and universities nationwide that has served as a catalyst in improving the quality of college theater in the United States. The awards received by Longwood faculty in early February were among those recognizing work in the program’s Region IV, which encompasses nine states, southern Virginia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
"The Love of Three Oranges, which is a modern take on a commedia dell’arte fairy tale, was a really fun show," said Chapman, who joined the faculty in fall 2013 after teaching at Ashland University in Ohio.
Cook-Day joined the faculty in fall 2012 after working as wardrobe supervisor for the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts.
Arkin will retire this spring following 24 years at Longwood, during which she has directed about 30 Longwood Theatre productions and appeared in numerous productions.
