Richmond Symphony to perform at Longwood this Friday, Nov. 7

This Friday is the last chance this year to experience the Richmond Symphony at Longwood University.

The program, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in Jarman Auditorium, will be conducted by Steven Smith and will include Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony and the Horn Concerto No. 1 by Richard Strauss.

Tickets—which are only $20 each—are on sale now through the Longwood Box Office. Sales are steady for this popular event, so be sure to reserve yours by phone at 434-395-2474 or in person at the Longwood Theatre Box Office. Longwood students will be admitted free but must reserve a ticket. Tickets will also be available at the door.

The concert continues a partnership established by the late Dr. John Cook, a 1952 Longwood alumnus and benefactor of the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences. The Richmond Symphony also performed at Longwood in January 2014 and October 2012.

The day prior to the Richmond Symphony concert, the Longwood University Wind Symphony will present a free concert, also at 7:30 p.m. in Jarman Auditorium. The concert celebrates the 200th birthday of Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone, and the 160th anniversary of John Philip Sousa, one of America’s most beloved and well-known composers.

Dr. Charles Kinzer, professor of music, will be the saxophone soloist for "Fantasia for Alto Saxophone" by Claude T. Smith. The ensemble will end the concert with a rousing edition of Sousa’s popular "The Stars and Stripes Forever."

Other works at the Wind Symphony concert will include "Light Calvary Overture," by Franz von Suppe, the world premiere of "Variations on a Motive by Beethoven," by Dr. Gordon Ring, professor of music and the Wind Symphony’s conductor, and "Scenes from the Louvre," by Norman Dello Joio.
