WMLU, the Longwood University campus radio station, took home first prize in its category for the fifth straight year at the annual Virginia Association of Broadcasters awards in June.
The station took home the prize for outstanding sports coverage for a non-commercial station, marking its sixth first-place award since 2009. Representing the station at the awards banquet were sports director Steven Sommer ’14, DJ Kevin Green ’13 and general manager Michelle Goldchain ’14.
"The quality of programming we air on WMLU is improving each year," said Jeff Halliday, associate professor of communication studies and co-adviser to the station. "Our sports coverage has become the hallmark of the station, competing with and being recognized above both college and professional commercial stations across the state."
WMLU, a student-run organization, started in 1981 and features live streaming of music and original student programming. When student programming is not scheduled, the station broadcasts a National Public Radio feed.
