Permitted and Prohibited Items

Main Campus - Items Permitted

For safety, only use UL-approved personal appliances.

  • Air fryer (not to exceed 1600 watts)
  • Air purifier
  • Approved Bed Risers - Plastic construction, may NOT have built-in electrical sockets or USB ports
  • Blender or mixer
  • Bread machine
  • Command hooks (student is responsible for any damage during removal)
  • Crockpot
  • Dehumidifier
  • Easy-Bake Oven
  • Electric can opener
  • Foam mattress pad/topper
  • Gaming console
  • Heating pad (medical documentation required for RCL)
  • Hot pot /soup warmer
  • Instant pot
  • Microwave (less than 1000 watts) Microfridge rental available
  • Musical equipment and amplification devices (of an acceptable level); surround sound speakers
  • Popcorn popper (air popper ONLY)
  • Power strips or multiplug devices with circuit breaker/surge protector and an ON/OFF switch

Main Campus - Items Prohibited

  • Air conditioners
  • Air fresheners that plug into an electrical outlet
  • Alcohol (if student is under 21)
  • Antennas and satellite dishes
  • Bed risers with built-in electric sockets or USB ports
  • Blocks to elevate bed (cinder blocks, wood and any other materials that may damage flooring)
  • Bunsen burners and hot plates (including but not limited to George Foreman grills, electric skillets/griddles, electric woks, fondue pots, chocolate fountains, s’mores makers, waffle irons, and sandwich and quesadilla makers)
  • Candles and candle warmers
  • Curtains, tapestries and other suspended decorative materials that are not treated to be flame-resistant
  • Deep fryer
  • Double-sided foam tape and duct tape
  • Drugs (other than those prescribed for the student by a medical professional)
  • Electric heaters and electric blankets
  • Empty alcohol containers (for decoration)
  • Extension cords
  • Fireworks, explosives and unsafe and/or flammable chemicals/liquids (including charcoal lighter fluid)
  • Floor lamps with multiple bulbs of any type
  • Fog machines
  • Grills (charcoal or propane)
  • Halogen lamps (any model or style)
  • Incense
  • Lanterns (exception: battery-powered lanterns)
  • Large personal appliances
  • Laser beams/pointers (any use not for classroom/academic purposes is prohibited)
  • Lava lamps
  • LED string lights with adhesive backing (significant wall damage during removal is highly likely and repairs are expensive; student is responsible for all repair costs)
  • Lighter fluid and charcoal that contains starter fluid
  • Live-cut greenery and other combustible items as outlined in the decoration policy
  • LP (propane) gas grill canisters
  • Marijuana
  • Multiplug adapters WITHOUT circuit breaker/surge protector

Important Rules for Campus Housing

For the safety and well-being of all residents, the following policies apply to Longwood-managed apartments (Lancer Park and Longwood Landings) and residence halls:

Alcohol Policy
Alcohol is not permitted in any residence hall rooms or Longwood-managed apartments unless all assigned residents are of legal drinking age.

Alcohol is strictly prohibited on all freshman-designated floors and in Johns and Moss Halls, regardless of resident age.

Weapons Policy
Firearms, including re-enactment weapons, and other hunting weapons (such as knives, bows, and arrows) are not allowed in residence halls or Longwood-managed apartments.
