Services

Enrolled undergraduate and graduate students who have paid the comprehensive fee and who provide a complete immunization record within the timeframe required by law. 

Faculty, staff and their spouses have access to the UHC for acute illnesses and and can be considered for chronic care management with the medical director on a case-by-case bases.

Faculty and staff's dependent children may come to the UHC for COVID screening testing for the purpose of travel. Must not have symptoms of COVID or be a contact of a case when coming for the testing.

Services

Clinicians at the University Health Center (UHC) evaluate and treat common health problems such as:

• bronchitis
• ear infections
• strep throat
• flu
• mono
• urinary infections
• sexually transmitted infections
• birth control management
• headaches
• allergy symptoms
• skin rashes
• colds
• pinkeye
• minor burns
• uncomplicated mental health issues
• osteopathic manipulation 
• Annual Wellness/Preventive Health Exams
• Sports Physicals
• Allergy Injections
• Administration of prescribed injectable medications
• Venipuncture (blood draw) for commercial lab testing
• Covid-19 Screening testing (Rapid Antigen and send off PCR)
• PPD placement

Every effort is made to treat acute needs in-house. If we're unable to treat them, an appropriate referral will be made.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Evaluations for ADHD are NOT offered by LUHC. 

A comprehensive evaluation for ADHD/ADD by a mental health specialist within the past three years is required if a student would like to be considered for treatment through LUHC. Testing can be obtained through a provider at home, through the Longwood Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) office, or providers in the Farmville community. A listing of provider can be found on the CAPS page. 

The evaluation must include objective testing, and a written report must include details of the various test performed. The most common objective test used for the evaluation of ADHD is the Continuous Performance Test. 

A copy of the written report can be submitted to LUHC in person, by mail, or fax (434)395-2783. In addition, students currently under treatment for ADHD will need to have their prescribing provider submit the last two years of records. 

Review and Notification

Once reports and records reviewed, students will be notified whether or not ADHD medications can be provided through LUHC. If approved an appointment can be scheduled with a physician to discuss care. 

LUHC ADHD Policy

LUHC adheres to a strict policy regarding ADHD treatment and a careful review of each patient's medical history for multiple reasons.

• A diagnosis of ADHD made in childhood may not persist into adulthood.
• Some students are misdiagnosed with ADHD as children.
• ADHD medications can have serious side effects.

Local primary care physicians and pediatric/adolescent medical specialists are available in the community for management of ADHD. 

Asthma/Allergies

Students who have asthma/allergy conditions or those concerned about general air quality may find that window air conditioning units and central air in air-conditioned residence halls are not sufficient.

Students with asthma/allergies or those concerned about general air quality may purchase and bring an LU approved, freestanding, vent-free air purification device for personal use.

Allergy shots are available for a fee. Students requiring allergy shots are responsible for providing their serum and medical order from their doctor.

Complex Medical Problems

For patients with complex chronic medical problems, it is in the best interest of the student to continue with their primary care or specialty provider. We will assist with the management of chronic health issues on a case to case basis.

Family Planning

The UHC has partnered with the Prince Edward County Health Department to conduct a family planning and sexually transmitted infection clinic every 4th Friday during the fall and spring semesters at the Prince Edward County Health Department. Call (434)392-8187 for an appointment.

Psychiatric Care and Medication

A psychiatric nurse practitioner is available on a limited, appointment-only basis to provide in-depth psychiatric care and medication monitoring.

We collaborate with Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) for counseling and psychological testing.
