We know the number one focus is our students and their academics. Most Greek organizations require a minimum GPA to remain a member. Many fraternities and sororities have educational programs, such as tutoring and study sessions. Several organizations offer member scholarships; these are based on academic merit and chapter leadership. Since obtaining a degree is their main priority, make sure your student realizes that he or she must keep up his grades if he or she wants to participate in a Greek organization.
Members of fraternities and sororities take on financial responsibility. The organization will determine the number of dues students will have to pay each semester. It's important that families have a good understanding of all Greek Life's financial aspects to determine if joining a fraternity or sorority is affordable.
Hazing is a violation of the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and Longwood University policies. Hazing is defined as any action taken or situation created intentionally, whether on or off Longwood property, by either fraternity/sorority organizations, student clubs/organizations, athletic teams, individual students or student groups, to produce mental or physical discomfort, endangerment of life, embarrassment, harassment, intimidation, or ridicule. Willingness to engage in any hazing activity does not render the Anti-Hazing Policy unenforceable.
On average, students should expect to contribute two to five hours per week for meetings and mandatory activities. Some organizations require more than others, as well as optional activities, such as holding an office, attending social events, helping with various projects, etc.
All new members must have at least both of the following:
Transfer students who enter Longwood with at least twelve (12) or more applied credit hours earned after high school graduation are eligible to participate in membership recruitment for fraternities and sororities beginning the semester they enroll.
