As we begin Fall Recruitment season, let us take a look back at Spring Rush 2019 for our Longwood chapters. Overall, IFC recruitment for the Spring semester of 2019 was a success. At the conclusion of IFC walk, we had 50 men join fraternity life on campus. Earlier, in the semester, CPC started recruitment with about 190 PNMs, a significant increase from 155 PNMs in Spring 2018 with a retention increase of 5 percent. This year, quota was increased to 18, compared to last year’s quota of 15. This means that each CPC chapter was able to extend up to 18 bids to new members. Our 6 NPHC chapters also had an exciting spring bringing in 14 new members. Lastly, Gamma Rho Lambda has newly been brought under the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. They brought in a new member this spring, as well.
“Recruitment numbers are always up in the air and change drastically per chapter every semester,” said Mason Patrick, VP of Recruitment of IFC fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi. As VP of Recruitment for the IFC fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi, Patrick’s job is to oversee the growth of their individual chapter. He makes sure his chapter plans rush events and meets with potential members weekly in order to assure their process runs smoothly and they feel welcome. On the IFC side of things, Jacob Baker works to oversee and advise the recruitment efforts for all seven of the IFC fraternities. He is in charge of working with the individual chapter recruitment chairmen of each respective fraternity, answering any questions or concerns they have, ensuring each chapter hosts their own recruitment events, and giving recruitment advice. Baker also plans recruitment events during IFC Rush Week to bring together all the fraternities for their common goal.
Parallel to IFC, CPC has Emily McCartney, whom runs Formal Recruitment for the 9 Panhellenic chapters. “For CPC, we have a 9-6-2 process, where PNMs start by going to all nine chapters and then six and then finally narrowing it down to two, and then its bid day,” McCartney said. The PNMs for CPC come back to school a week early to participate in Formal Recruitment. McCartney believes that you learn a lot about yourself in the recruitment process and it truly brings you out of your shell.
