Virginia Holocaust Museum: The Alexander Lebenstein Teacher Education Institute
The Institute is recommended for middle and high school educators who would like to or currently teach the Holocaust in their classrooms. Sessions focus on the Holocaust’s historical background and pedagogy which link to the Virginia Standards of Learning requirements. All sessions take place at the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond.
A limited number of $500 scholarships are available for teachers 50+ miles from Richmond. Scholarships are to help cover travel, housing, and meals. Please contact Megan Ferenczy with questions or to apply.
From Context to Classroom Part I: June 16-18, 2025
- 8:30 am – 5pm (on the last day, class ends at 1:30pm)

From Context to Classroom Part I is open to teachers who have never completed the Alexander Lebenstein Teacher Education Institute. With the successful completion of this 2 1/2 day in-person class and its requirements, your school division may allow you to apply up to 45 recertification points.
- In order to complete class requirements you must fully participate, which includes pre-reading and the use of the online platform Canvas and a final project. A certificate of completion, the $200 stipend, and the reimbursement of the $30 registration fee will be sent to you after the class and when all requirements are met.
From Context to Classroom Part II: July 14-16, 2025

Moton Museum Teacher Institute (MMTI)
Are you a history, civics, or government classroom teacher who wants additional support to teach about the Civil Rights Era? Participate in the 2025 Moton Museum Teacher Institute!
Online Canvas portion: June 20th to July 18th, 2025
In-person portion at the museum: June 25th to 27th, 2025
- This hybrid non-credit class includes three mandatory on-site days and two weeks to complete the online Canvas portion. The class is based on the Moton Museum’s permanent exhibition Moton School Story: Children of Courage. Teachers will engage with recorded lectures, review Civil Rights, Massive Resistance, and Desegregation histories, and create potential programming for their classroom. The class will cover Moton Museum history along with providing primary source analysis tools and research techniques.
- Teachers will have two weeks to finish all deliverables for a suggested 60 recertification points.

Summer Literacy Institute (SLI) - July 24-25, 2025
Dr. Jarred Amato, an award-winning English teacher and co-founder of Project LIT Community, will lead a Thursday workshop titled “Just Read It”, focusing on strategies to engage all readers, including frameworks like Read and WRAP, whole-class novels, and authentic grammar instruction. John Schu, a children's librarian and best-selling author, will deliver the Friday keynote “The Gift of Story”, exploring how stories connect us emotionally and inspire reflection. Sylvia Liu, an author and former environmental attorney, will be the Thursday banquet speaker, sharing her journey of writing stories about nature, family, and friendship, highlighting the power of both universal and personal stories.
