Longwood Class Attendance Policy

Commitment to Learning

Longwood University expects all students to attend every class. Regular attendance supports your academic success and contributes to a strong, engaged learning community.

Understanding Absences

Excused Absences

Athletic travel and other approved university activities are considered excused absences. Faculty will provide reasonable opportunities for you to make up any missed work.

If you believe you have not been given that opportunity, contact the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) for assistance.

Unexcused Absences

Missing class without an approved excuse can affect your grades. Each instructor will explain their attendance expectations in the course syllabus, following these university guidelines:

  • You may receive a grade of “0” or “F” on work missed due to unexcused absences.
  • Your overall course grade may be lowered by up to one letter grade if you miss 10% of class meetings without an excuse.
  • You may receive a final grade of “F” if you miss 25% of total class meetings (excused or unexcused).

Your Responsibilities as a Student

You are responsible for:

  • Attending all classes unless you have an approved reason for missing them.
  • Communicating with instructors about any absences as soon as possible.
  • Completing missed work or reviewing missed content.

Expectations for Student-Athletes

Longwood University and Longwood Athletics work together to minimize class conflicts caused by athletic travel. However, participation in intercollegiate athletics may occasionally require travel during class time.

Student-Athlete Responsibilities

To stay on track academically, you must:

  • Share your travel schedule with each instructor at the start of your season.
  • Discuss class conflicts early and make a plan to complete missed work.
  • Confirm arrangements about missed work with your instructor before each trip.
  • Complete all assignments and coursework as required. Travel does not excuse your academic responsibilities.

If illness or injury affects your attendance, it will be reported through the Dean of Students Office, just as it is for all Longwood students.

Grade Appeal Policy

Longwood faculty are committed to fair and accurate evaluation of student work.

Grades are assigned at the instructor's discretion, but students have the right to appeal a final grade if they believe it was assigned unfairly.

Grade Appeal Deadlines

  • February 1: For grades from the fall semester or winter intersession
  • September 15: For grades from the spring or summer semesters

Appeals must be submitted in writing and may result in a grade being raised, lowered, or remaining the same.
