Lissa Power-deFur, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, serves as the Interim Dean of the College of Education and Human Services. She is Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders and previously served as Chair of the Department of Social Work and Communication Sciences and Disorders. She is Director of Longwood's Speech, Hearing, and Learning Services.
She teaches in the areas of ethics and professional issues, multicultural issues in speech-language pathology, speech science, speech sound disorders, and aural rehabilitation. Dr. Power-deFur has been honored to receive the Maria Bristow Starke award for Faculty Excellence in 2012, the Graduate Research Award in 2016, the William David Stuart award for Leadership and Services in 2018, and the Student-Faculty Recognition Award at the 2020 Commencement.
Dr. Power-deFur worked as a clinician in rehabilitation, early intervention, and education settings. She taught at Radford University and served as speech-language consultant, policy analyst, and student services director at the Va Department of Education. She earned her bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in speech-language pathology from the University of Virginia, where she minored in Audiology and Deaf Education.
Lissa is active in her profession, at both the state and national level, most recently serving as Vice President of Standards and Ethics in Speech-Language Pathology at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She is an accreditation site visitor for the Council of Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Her latest publications are Speech-Language Pathologiss as Expert Witnesses (with colleague Brenda Seal), Common Core State Standards and the Speech-Language Pathologists. She has supported 22 students in their research presentations, has completed over 200 publication and presentations, and generated over $2 million in grants to Longwood.
Lissa joined Longwood in 2004 and has served the university as the faculty representative to the Board of Visitors (2015-18) and on such groups as the Finance and Planning Committee, the Promotion and Tenure Committee, and Graduate Council. When not on campus, she enjoys gardening, walks in Virginia's state parks, and time with her grandchildren.
