Dan Michael
Associate Professor of Physical Education and Health Education, Teacher Education

Dr. Dan Michael is an assistant professor in the Health and Physical Education department at Longwood University. Prior to arriving at Longwood University, he taught for 18 years as a physical education and math teacher in middle school and high school in California.

His research agenda focuses on the Whole-Child Whole-School approach to school-based health programs. Specifically, I have researched Comprehensive School Physical Activity Programs (CSPAP) with a specific focus on physical activity during the school day using a service-learning approach, quality physical education programs, preservice classrooms teacher physical activity promotion, preparing preservice physical educators for their roles in CSPAP, and examining Physical Activity Instructional Program (PAIP) physical activity accumulation. I have made an attempt to engage in both quantitative and qualitative research, with an emphasis in Educational Research and Measurement.

Dr. Michael holds a Ph.D from the University of South Carolina in Physical Education Teacher Education, as well as a M.S. in Kinesiology and B.S. in Physical Education from California State University Fullerton.

In his spare time, Dr. Michael enjoys spending time with his wife, Dona and enjoys camping, mountain biking, paddleboarding, and other outdoor activities. He also looks forward to exploring the Farmville and Richmond areas.
