Clarinetist Dr. Roland Karnatz has an undergraduate degree and Postgraduate Diploma from the Victorian College of the Arts/ University of Melbourne - Australia. Following additional studies in Germany and The Netherlands, he earned a Master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Doctorate from Louisiana State University. He served on the faculties at VCU and Randolph Macon College. For ten summers Roland worked in Rome, Italy where he was Technical Director for Operafestival di Roma. He has taught at Longwood University since 2005 as Adjunct Professor of Music, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer of Music.
Roland plays clarinet, didgeridoo and explores the field of interactive electro acoustic music through live performance with the Kyma computer system. He serves as Technical Director for VCU Opera and in his spare time he makes opera sets and raises bees, chickens, fruits and vegetables.
