Dr. Gutiérreez teaches a wide variety of Spanish courses, foussing on Latin American in the upper level courses. She was recently selected as a Brock Experience co-fellow to set up a program about immigration.

Her literary research has focused at various times the Spanish Golden Age and the Enlightenment period, but only rarely strays from epic poetry. Her Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research current focuses on improving student outcomes for the third semester Spanish course, SPAN 201.

Dr. Gutiérrez volunteers at the Immigration Center in Farmville, teaching English with the help of Longwood students and professors. She has lived and travelled extensively abroad; her favorite country is Perú, but El Salvador is a very close second.
