Sarah Esberger is an Assistant Professor in the Reading, Literacy, and Learning program. She has a Bachelors degree in English Literature from Rhodes College, a Masters degree in English from Middle Tennessee State University, and an Ed.D. in Literacy, Culture, and Language Education from Indiana University at Bloomington. Her dissertation work focused on uplifting the voices of high school English teachers in their efforts to keep the focus on their students' humanity in the face of dehumanizing educational policies.

Prior to joining Longwood University, Sarah was a high school English teacher in Tennessee. During her eighteen years in public schools, Sarah was proud to have worked as a teacher-leader for National Writing Project, started and run a high school writing center, and served as a table leader for the AP English Language and Composition exam. Sarah is also continuing to work with a grant through the National Endowment for the Humanities that engages teachers across the country in studying the history of teaching English in the United States called "Making the Good Reader and Citizen."

Sarah and her family are happy to now reside in Central Virginia with their three dogs and five cats.
