Assistant Professor

Alecia Blackwood, EdD, is an Assistant Professor in the Elementary Education program at Longwood University. Currently, she teaches elementary literacy, disciplinary literacy, behavior management, and human development classes. Before coming to Longwood, she served as a Literacy Instructional Coach, Reading Specialist, Adjunct Professor at Valencia College, Fulbright-Hays U.S. Scholar (Namibia and Botswana, 2017), a teacher consultant, and has taught multiple grades across the K-12 in public and private schools.

Alecia holds a doctorate and a master's degree in Teacher Leadership from the University of Central Florida. Alecia is passionate about teaching and learning. She has been sharing her expertise with educators at the University of Central Florida, the University of Botswana, the University of Namibia, and the University of Johannesburg through lectures and workshops.

 She has published a book on Ubuntu pedagogy and has written several articles. Her research interests include culturally responsive teaching, early literacy, instructional design, teacher preparation, restorative justice, social-emotional learning, mindfulness, and trauma-informed teaching.

Alecia loves to go on travel adventures, cook, and spend time with her family in her spare time.
