Give students a real-world view of your profession.

Longwood’s Work Shadow Program connects motivated students with professionals for a behind-the-scenes look at careers in action. Whether for a few hours, a full day, or multiple days, this experience offers valuable insight into workplace culture, industry expectations, and daily responsibilities—while giving you the chance to mentor and inspire future professionals.

We are proud of our relationship with Longwood. We want to provide as many opportunities to students as possible as they are the next generation of citizen leaders.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are students matched with professionals?

We post work shadow opportunities on Handshake, and students sign up for those that align with their career goals. Once matched, we’ll share your student’s details and provide tips for planning the day. After completing their preparation session, the student will contact you to confirm the schedule and discuss how the shadow day will unfold.

How much time is required?

Most hosts commit a few hours to a full day, including some preparation time. We ask that you provide a schedule in advance so the student can prepare.

Is a match guaranteed?

No, but we make every effort to connect students and employers. If not matched, we’ll keep you in our host database for future sessions.

Can I host more than one student?

Yes. Just be sure to structure the day so each participant has a meaningful experience.

What’s expected of hosts?

Give students a realistic view of your role and industry through observation, discussion, and interaction with colleagues. Reviewing resumes or offering career advice is encouraged.

How long should the shadow last?

At least four hours (shorter if virtual). Some hosts choose to extend the experience to a full day or more.
