What You'll Study

Major

Investigate the function of the natural world from the inner workings of individual cells to the properties of whole ecosystems. As a Longwood Biology major you will study how cells function, how whole organisms like humans work and are put together, and how life of all types interacts to create the dynamic living world we live in.

You will receive a strong foundation in fundamental biology and then work with your adviser to tailor your coursework to develop specialized expertise in your specific area of interest.

We also offer these three concentrations.

Minor in Biology

General Biology

You will receive a strong foundation in fundamental biology and then work with your adviser to tailor your coursework to develop specialized expertise in your specific area of interest.

Biology Teacher Preparation

Do you want to teach biology in Virginia's public schools? Take courses required for the biology major, with the same accessible and expert faculty, and then some additional education courses. Senior year you'll participate in a professional semester, aka student teaching.

Minor

You'll take Integrative Biology (BIOL 120), Introduction to Genetics and Cell Biology (BIOL 250), or Introduction to Ecology and Evolution (BIOL 251). Then you need 4 more courses, and two of these classes will be above the 200 level.

Complementary Minors

Earning a minor has major advantages! It’s like getting a mini-major, and gives you the competitive edge in the professional arena.

You’ll boost your employment profile; sharpen your skill sets; and exhibit your strong work ethic.

Some academic minors will give you a chance to explore your other interests, and some minors help you specialize your degree.

These minors are compatible with your Biology degree:

Courses

The core curriculum, which includes courses in Genetics, Evolution and The Diversity of Life, ensures you will have a broad background in the diverse field of biological sciences.
